Practice Golf The Right Way And Better Your Game

Many people believe that they should practice golf to swing identical to their favorite pros. And on the surface that seems logical. After all, they are the greatest at what they do. And if you’re not trying to be like Jack Nicklaus, you are still receiving more points than you can handle from professionals on television and in magazines.

Well it’s time for a reality check. Becoming the next Arnold Palmer may be your ambition, but for the great majority of us, that is not going to occur. Very few ever get to that level and odds are you won’t either. Improving your scores should be your really realistic goal. Yea it would be good to play like Tiger, but to emulate his game, or that of any other master, is clearly a mistake.

Keep in mind these guys don’t simply hit the course after they get off work. Their business is golf, and it is more than fourty hours a week. They get up and hit the course, putting in a tremendous amount of hours working to become better at their craft. But since normal people don’t play golf to make ends meet, they don’t have the amount of time free that the professionals do. So what you have to do is work within the time constraints that life has given you.

We’ve all watched our favorite pros hit a beautifully lofted shot that stops dead on the green a couple of feet from the hole, or maybe one that rolls back towards the pin. We could spend months working on this, but as a weekend golfer, there are more productive ways to spend our time that will result in lower scores. But we are better served to work within our style and stick to the fundamentals.

So let’s analyze how we do our golf practice. If you are like most golfers, you go to the driving range and spend a large majority of your time blasting away drives. But exactly how many drives do you hit while playing a round of golf? Certainly it’s an important club, but others are more critical. What you truly should be practicing the majority of the time is your short game.

We understand it’s difficult to get charged up about practicing the short game, but it will be easy to get emotional about the lower scores you will be posting. Ask any touring pro how much time they spend on this aspect of their game and they’ll probably say about 80% of their practice time is dedicated to this. There are numerous different things to work on here, and the professionals will practice them all from every possible angle. And while we don’t want you to imitate their swing, it’s likely a smart idea to concentrate your practice in the same areas as they do.

This may describe you. You have the farthest and straightest drive among the golfers you play with, but your scores are still 90 or higher. The problem is clearly with your short game and this is where you should concentrate your practice efforts. Improve here, and see your scores go down dramatically.

So the next time you get off your job and want to travel to the driving range to blast a few drives, modify your plan. Work on your putting. Put some extra effort into your pitches, chips, shots from the sand trap as well as your wedge shots up to 75 yards.

If you don’t think this is a smart idea than think about this. Did you know that during a typical round, more than half of your strokes are from closer than 75 yards. This includes putts, chips, etc. Logic dictates that you should therefore spend at least 50% of your practice time working on them. If you’re still shooting in the 90’s, less than 20% of your strokes are with a driver off the tee. If you are truthful with yourself, you will understand that this is where you need to practice most.

Sure hitting drives on the range is fun, but it’s not nearly as much fun as watching your scores fall by as many as 10 strokes per round.

The optimum way to practice at home is by getting a golf practice net. You can read more golf tips similar to this, as well as read course and golf equipment reviews and information by visiting http://www.AllThingsGolfBlog.com.

Keep Consistency in Your Golf Swing

A consistent swing is probably what many golfers dream of when our heads hit the pillow.

First, let us do a little review of the golf swing. To hit the ball squarely on the center of the club head you must take the club through the proper swing path. A normal swing path will allow the club to align itself correctly with the ball to hit the shot you are trying to hit.

Anyway, this process starts with your address, moves through your take away, into the back swing, into the transition between back swing and down swing, into contact, and finishes with the follow through.

The keys to a consistent swing are: 1) efficient golf swing mechanics and 2) the body. Golf Swing Mechanics

Golf Swing mechanics is perhaps the easier of the two areas to understand. Beginning at address, moving through all the stages of the golf swing, and finishing with the follow through, the body is required to move through a specific sequence of movements to do the golf swing correctly. If the body does not move through this sequence properly then the result will be a poor, inefficient and awkward looking swing.

Over time, a poor swing results in poor consistency (every once in awhile you hit a good shot regardless of your swing, that’s what keeps us coming back for more). In addition to the body performing an intricate number of biomechanical movements in the golf swing, timing of these movements is critical for you to hit the ball successfully.

Each and every biomechanical movement within the golf swing has a certain sequence and timing. If they are not performed in the correct order or timing, then the golf swing will not be efficient. Poor timing results in those wonderful slices, snap hooks, chili dips and topping the ball that we know all too well.

Now, how do we improve on the mechanics of the golf swing? 2) Practice, practice, practice. Fix the Engine that Swings the Club

One question perhaps help you realize the importance of “the body” when it comes to the golf swing. What swings the golf club?

Some of the answers I have heard are: “my hands,” “the swing,” “my hips” and even “the grip.” The answer is your body. It is the body that swings the club. So why is this so important to consistency in your golf game?

We know from our golf lessons, that there are certain positions the body is required to be in during the golf swing. Now, from the address position your body have to move the club on the correct path and generate club head speed to hit the ball accurately and with power. What most people do not understood is that for the body to perform the golf swing correctly, certain parameters need to be met by the body. If your body does not have the minimal levels of these factors in relation to the golf swing, then what do you think will happen? Well, let me tell you, it will be very difficult for the body to swing the club with the correct mechanics. So what does consistency in my golf swing really come down to?

It is important to understand that improvements in your golf swing mechanics and improvements in your body specific to golf are same important when it comes to creating a consistent golf swing. If you ignore either the body or the mechanics, it would be safe to say that your golf swing and game will suffer. Take some time on a routine basis to address both the mechanics of your swing and the body supporting it.

Protect Your Golf Club

Golf is an expensive game, it is much more expensive than playing football or even baseball, you need to get some training and golf apparel, and on top of that you got the equipment which is pretty pricey. If you are a golfer you are probably aware of this, and you probably know that there are a lot things you can use to protect your golf clubs.

Golf club heads, in particular, have to be taken cared of more than any other golfing accessory. No matter how meticulous you are with protecting your golf club heads, rust is inevitable. However, you can slow the problem down by getting the right shield – a golf club head cover, that is. Club heads are manufactured using chrome-plated carbon steel. Constant use of the club exposes the steel to moisture, abrasion, and friction, resulting, eventually, to rust (and a poor hit).

Using golf club head covers to protect the iron will help keep the area dry and delay rust formation. Several people say using club head covers will only trap the moisture in. For the stylish, funky golf club head covers could be a status symbol. Designer golf club head covers are available for sale to give your clubs that sophisticated look. If you’re into fun stuff, you can also user golf club head covers that have profile designs. If you’re a fan of Bugs Bunny, there isn’t any reason why you couldn’t have a Bugs Bunny golf club head cover if you want to.

Again, golf, while criticized as being a game for the frail sportsman, is actually an activity that calls for more effort than it seems – intellectual effort, that is. However, none of the precise calculations would bring any golf game justice if the equipment of war are not in their best shape. Golf club heads are the most sensitive of all the golfing accessory. Thus, they should be taken cared of and protected well with club head covers.

The Competitive Side of Golf – Is it For You?

Competitive golf is a juiced up form of the game. For many golfers it adds an element to the game that makes it incredibly fun. For other, it is a form of torture.

Part I is for those golfers on the fence about competing. It offers clues that may help you decide if competition is for you. Part II talks about preparations for competition; things like practice, gear, and knowledge of the rules. Part III delves into the competition itself and is primarily about the thoughts that creep into your head during competition.

Is Competitive Golf for You?

“Golf” and “Competitive Golf” are almost two different sports. Both are fun but the competitive part of the game makes it really different. Golf is mostly about being with friends and enjoying the beauty of the game, the exercise, and the challenge. Competitive Golf should have everything that Golf has but with the added twist of beating other players. The addition of this little variation really changes the game.

By Competitive Golf we are not just talking about the PGA Tour, but things like the Tuesday night league at your local golf course or the city golf tournament. Here are some questions you can ask yourself to help you decide if you even want to compete:

1. If you are reading this, you are at least interested so you passed the first test.

2. Can you handle failure? Even Tiger Woods wins less than one-half the time. If you want to work on humility, you should consider competing because any golf competitor will fail more times than succeed.

3. How do you handle pressure? Do you like pressure or do you try to avoid it? If you would like to handle pressure better, competitive golf may be good for your personal development.

4. Do you have a handicap? There are two types of tournaments amateurs play. One is called a “Gross Tournament” where everyone plays even up. No one gets or gives shots to opponents. For this to work, all the players need to play at relatively the same skill level so even if there are no shots exchanged, you need a handicap to get you in the right “flight”. The other type of tournament is called a “Net Tournament” and here shots are exchanged to allow players of varying skills to compete and a handicap is absolutely essential.

5. What is your knowledge of the Rules of Golf? To compete you need to have an understanding of the most common rules like “out of bounds”, “unplayable lie”, “hazards”, etc. There are just a few you need to know. The others you can look up when the situation arises.

6. Do you like to wager when you play with your buddies? This gives you a taste of what it’s like to compete, but competitive golf is still different than just betting with your golfing buddies. If you do not like the feeling of betting, you will probably not enjoy competition.

Hopefully this will give you clues about whether you will enjoy “Competitive Golf”.

Nippon 1050GH Shaft Review

Overview/Technology-

Nippon shaft for irons have been around a long time.  With that length of time comes accumulated knowledge of how a shaft should perform.  They know shafts, because they’ve been in the trenches coming up with new technology and offering to the golfing public.

I was browsing their website recently and came across this on their home page which I whole-heatedly agree:

“The shaft is one of the most important yet most overlooked elements of golf equipment. The fact is,the proper shaft can make a major difference in club performance and in your enjoyment of the game of golf.”

That said, Nippon is without a doubt a leader in the golf shaft market, especially the iron shafts.  Nippon shafts come standard in many of the top golf club manufacturers including Cleveland, Mizuno, Nike, Ping, and Srixon.  That says a lot for the trust factor of Nippon.

Nippon offers many models and we will delve deeper into each of their models individually in later reviews.

The Nippon Models-

Nippon 750GH- The Lightest of the Nippon steel shafts, designed for a stable, fluid swing.

Nippon 850GH- Rapidly growing in popularity, pegged as “attacking” shaft.  Still an ultra-lightweight model that features an easy contact thanks to their light weight and consistent directionality.

Nippon 950GH- Nippon’s top-selling model and probably the favorite among golfers of most all levels looking to take their game to the next level.

Nippon 1050GH- A heavier model made for golfers that like to hit hard.

Nippon 1150GH Tour- Another shaft made for golfers that hit hard.  The 1150GH TOUR Steel shaft for irons (Semi-lightweight type) the semi-lightweight steel shaft.

Nippon 950 GH WF- The long irons combine easy-swinging light weight with easy contact — plus the kind of distance you have to experience to believe.  Short irons provide a slightly heavier feel for stability.

Nippon V90- Inherits likened performance of the 950GH but while further reducing weight to 90 grams and using a lower center of gravity.

Actual Feedback-

“Nippon 990 Uniflex in my irons and they are the best steel shafts I’ve used”

Pros/Positives-

Nippon is certainly one of the top steel shaft makers around and it shows.  They have a loyal following that swear this is the best steel shaft available.

Cons/Negatives-

Probably not as well known as Rifle and True Temper due to it’s basically an Asian shaft, but nevertheless retain a large market.

Overall Rating-

I would confirm Nippon are among the best, if not the best iron shafts available today.  They provide a wide variety of options/models and have a strong following.  I recently did a Poll on the favorite steel shaft and Nippon came in a close second to Rifle ahead of True Temper!  For more great Golf Shaft Reviews, please visit Golf Gear Select, the Home of the Golf Review.
